Religious knights in the 1200's were among the first people to administer first aid. They looked after and treated pilgrims as well as their fellow knights. They also shared their insightful wisdom, and trained other knights in order to treat battlefield injuries. Not much is recorded in the past about the use of first-aid in the middle ages, and it is only used again within an organisational capacity until 1859. It was then that Jean Henri Dunant gathered together local villagers to help the injured of the battle of Solferino. Although Dunant didn't witness the battle, he was horrified by the aftermath. Dunant was moved because he saw hundreds of wounded soldiers suffering following the battle. Along with administering first aid on the wounded that day, Dunant would also put in place a sequence of events which would change history. His actions led to the Geneva Conventions and the formation of the organisation which would later become the Red Cross. The important thing aim was to provide help to sick and wounded soldiers in the battlefield.

In 1877, St John Ambulance was formed. Like the knights from the 11th century their principles was to teach first aid. The term first-aid was initially utilized in 1878, probably based on two other phrases used at that time: first treatment, and national aid. The concept of teaching first-aid to civilians first materialised in 1878 and was pioneered by Major Peter Shepherd and Colonel Francis Duncan. Major Shepherd conducted the very first ever class on first aid in a School Hall in Woolwich, England. With the help of a fellow physician, Shepherd created a complete curriculum on first-aid training.

With all the advancement in technology and equipment first-aid has become simpler but much more effective than in the earlier years. It is very good for every person to understand first-aid, and doesn’t take a great deal of time or money in becoming equipped.
